State of knowledge
The first step will be to establish a comprehensive state of knowledge on coastal erosion protection techniques using ecosystem services. This synthesis will be based in particular on experiments conducted in the Caribbean, especially in the French territories where the ONF has several years’ experience feedback on these practices (management of land use and soil compaction and associated degradation, restoration of degraded sites, plant engineering).
Good Practice Guide
At the end of this inventory and of the additional observations made on the pilot sites, a guide of good practices for the use of these techniques in the Caribbean territories will be drafted. The focus is on the coastal protection provided by plants (root and aerial systems), as well as on the impact of the management of coastal areas (spreading of urban centres and economic activities, changes in visitor numbers, management of sargasso deposits and sand sampling, etc.).
